West Chester Film Festival

Last weekend Jay Rolfe attended the West Chester Film Festival in West Chester PA. It was the fourth annual, and the best so far. Thanks to Festival President Laura Barton-Vely and the many board and committee members, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and filmmakers. The Festival presents independent short films, and there were films from many countries and states. Awards are presented to the best in about eight categories.

Starting today, cable provider Comcast, one of the title sponsors of the Festival, is showing some of the award winning films on the "On Demand" section of its cable network, at least in this area. Go to "On Demand" and click on "Get Local" then click on "W.C. Film Festival." As of this morning, two films were available. Comcast officials at the Festival told us that all award winners would be available, so I guess the rest are coming.

In yesterday's post I forgot to mention the nice coverage of Laura Barton's solo show at the Chester County Art Association by John Chambless of the Daily Local News. Nice job, John!

I went to the exhibit with my wife Randy Rolfe, http://www.randyrolfe.com/. We both enjoyed it very much. Laura had a lot of people interested in her work, and sold well. She called her show "Continuum, a show of where I've been, I am, and I'm heading." She does very nice town scenes and landscapes of the local area. "Relic" was one of my favorites of her more realistic style. Since my personal taste runs toward Impressionism and bright colors, I love where she's heading. One of her earlier works, "Long Island, ME #2" presaged the move. My favorite was "Illusion" for its beautiful sky. "Morning Dog Walk" I also liked for its even more dramatic sky, as well as "Waiting," "A New Day," and "Gold and Platinum," a nice farm scene painted over canvas and credit cards with a holographic bird showing through the paint. Very interesting.

This was a painting day for me. All day. I've been working on my latest painting, "Sexy Lady," which I described in my post yesterday, Thursday, March 1, 2007. It's coming along nicely.

Tonight I'm going to the opening reception of a solo show for Laura Barton, a local West Chester artist, at the Chester County Art Association. I saw the painting she put on the invitation postcard at the Art Forum last week (see my post of Friday, Feb 23), so I'm looking forward to seeing more interesting local scenes.

Last night, Thursday Feb 22, I went with my lovely and supportive wife Randy Rolfe (http://www.randyrolfe.com/) to the first of a monthly series of discussions by artists called Art Forum at The Arts Scene, the successor to the Holland Art House, in West Chester PA, run by contemporary art lover Ben Gall. http://www.theartsscene.org/ There's great food and drink at the Menta Cafe inside The Arts Scene, cheerfully dispensed by the "Dutch Masters," what I call the ladies who run it who are originally from Holland, and one of whom paints copies of Vermeer paintings. There were about a dozen artists with widely varying styles, as well as other guests, and we had a lively discussion. I now wish I'd thought to note the names of all the artists so I could credit them all. Jeff Schaller (http://www.pinkcowstudio.com/), Laura Barton (http://www.laurabarton.com/), and Antonio Puri (http://antoniopuri.com/) are the ones I knew or was familiar with. I really wish I had gotten info from the others. If you check out the websites of these three, you'll see how different they all are. I'm looking forward to next month.
